Leaving the marina in November

Leaving the marina in November

Just north of Norman’s Cay is a small island called Saddle Cay and Island World.

At the top of Saddle Cay was a house and a couple small outbuildings which we had not explored before but did this time.  Someone had done a great of work to haul all the materials up to the top and create an open air  house with 360 degree views and a great rain catchment system and 3 cisterns.  The 2 outbuilding were guest rooms with cisterns under.  The main house had an interesting kitchen, 3 walls that completely opened up and the center of the roof was open.

It appeared that the last person staying there was in 2008 but there was still food in the fridge, propane in the tanks and a bookshelf full of books. There were 2 bins of building supplies and even 2 bags of sails.   I could have the place livable in a week and under $1,000.
Guest ready in a month.  We were all set to move in until Cheryl looked it up on the internet and found it is for sale for only $11 MILLION !!  I would love to know the story of what happened to the people that expended all the effort to build what is there now and what caused it to be abandoned for so many years.  The Bahamas is full of ruins like this, even on islands with little communities.  Even large resort projects that got started but fizzled out.

We visited here before and was one of our favorite places.  We were not sure the new boat could fit so we took the dingy in.  At high tide, the water cascades between the 2 islands and at low, they are one.  Island World visitors come from The Atlantis resort on Nassau on 2 high speed powerboats at a cost of $200 pp.  They land as a very well decorated mini uninhabited day resort.  It is one of the nicest looking places we have discovered so far.
